FAQs
When are rehearsals?
Rehearsals will take place after school, some weekday evenings and on most Saturdays between January and the show at the end of March. Full cast rehearsals will begin on Saturday, January 10, 2026, and run from 10:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm. Small group and some individual rehearsals will be held during the week after school, typically starting at 4:30pm. As we get closer to Opening Night, there will be more mandatory weekday and weekend rehearsals. The rehearsal schedule will be determined based on casting, student availability, and directors’ availability. Most students are called 1- 2x a week plus Saturdays until we get closer to production in March.
Do I have to attend all rehearsals?
We develop the rehearsal schedule based on student availability, as well as the directors’ availability. If a student has not listed a conflict and is called to rehearsal, he/she is expected to attend. If there is a partial conflict, students should attend as much of that day’s rehearsal as possible.
Students and parents will sign a performance contract with defined expectations. Any student who is repeatedly absent from rehearsals will not be allowed to continue in the production. We expect the same level of discipline and commitment as students have for team sports or other activities.
What if I want to be involved in the musical but don’t want to be on the stage?
We need LOTS of student and adult help on this show – onstage and off! We need help from students and parents with sets, props, costumes, running crew, and more. If you are interested in being part of the stage crew, email us and let us know at MONMusicalTheatre@gmail.com. We will add your name to the stage crew list.
I want to be on stage crew. Do I need to audition?
No, the stage crew does not audition. 😊
Who are the directors?
Mrs. Roxanne Stone, Director: Mrs. Stone founded the MoN Theatre program with Seussical Jr in 2018. She is a performer and director and holds the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre. She has directed plays and musicals for 30 years, working with children, high school students, and adults. Mrs. Stone’s daughter Taz graduated from MON in 2019.
Arielle Bayer, Music Director: Ms. Bayer is an accomplished musician and musical director with credits in professional, educational, and community theatres. Ms. Bayer was music director for MoN’s productions since Shrek Jr. in 2019. She is a special education music teacher with Montgomery County Public Schools.
Chloe Stewart, (TITLE) - Ms. Chloe joined MoN Theatre in our production of The SpongeBob Musical, however, she is best known for her classical music career, singing roles with Virginia Opera and Opera Mississippi. She attained her Bachelor's of Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and continued her education at the University of Mobile for her Master's of Music. She has also done extensive work in musicals, recently creating the role of Mechelle in The Window King. She has appeared on television's "Crime Nation" with The CW and is currently filming a horror movie. Her diverse performance background as well as musical tuition has led her to teaching private music lessons to carry the joy of performing to the next generation!
Is there a cost to be in the play?
Yes. There is a $200 per student Production Fee that helps cover the costs of the show. The crew fee is $100 per student. Fees will be collected at the first rehearsal or crew call in January 2025. The production fee includes a show t-shirt. If your family has a financial hardship, please speak with the producer or director. No child will be denied participation due to an inability to pay the fee.
Callbacks and Casting
Callbacks will be held the week of December 15th, 2025 after school and are by invitation only. Not everyone will be needed for callbacks, but it does not mean you have not been cast if you are not called. Casting is dependent not only on whether a student is a good fit vocally, but how they fit into the whole ensemble.
Important: Student availability for rehearsals (i.e., conflicts given to us on the conflict calendar) will weigh heavily on casting.
What roles are available?
There are a lot of roles available—large and small! Beauty and the Beast Jr. is perfect for those
who want to be in the show but don’t want a solo singing part. All roles require singing,
movement and good comic timing. Boys are encouraged to audition!!
The story demands everyone jump on board as we create the magical world of Beauty and the
Beast Jr! Here are the character breakdowns for Beauty and the Beast Jr:
Narrators
These are villagers who serve as storytellers. These are wonderful roles for performers with
natural stage presence and big, clear voices. These characters are important for setting up the
world and moving the story forward. The Narrators provide great opportunities to involve
students who are more comfortable speaking than singing. The script is written to feature four
Narrators, but you can incorporate more students (or fewer) depending on the size of your cast.
Be sure the students you choose for these roles can enunciate and project, as they guide the
focus and pace of this beautiful tale. These roles are non-singing, but the actors can also be a
part of your ensemble. Gender: any
Belle
Belle is a smart, confident young woman from a small village who longs for adventure. You will
want a strong singer and actress who is able to stand up to Gaston while showing compassion
for Maurice, the Servants and eventually the Beast.
Maurice
Maurice is an aging and eccentric inventor, but more importantly, the adoring and protective
father of Belle. This non-solo singing role is perfect for the student who can have fun
interpreting this crazy old man while conveying some very strong emotions: fear and fatherly
love.
Beast
The Beast is a young prince who was hideously transformed by the Enchantress’ spell. Casting
for size is not as important as choosing a student who can handle this complex character: a
dictator, a hurt child, a hero, a defender and a smitten prince. Cast an actor who can deliver a
range of conflicting emotional states. Although the Beast does sing a small bit during
Something There and the Finale, this is truly an acting role (and his lyrics can be spoken if you
cast a non-singer). If you choose to cast the Prince separately from the Beast, the Prince would
end up singing the Beast lines in the Finale.
Gaston
Gaston is pompous and dim-witted and will do whatever it takes to win Belle s hand. Gaston
has all the confidence in the world but lacks the humility to balance it. Finding a strong singer
and actor is more important than physical size and stature for this role. He has to be able to sell
his big eponymous number with gusto and arrogance as well as lead the Villagers in The Mob
Song. Biceps can be added to the costume, but the bravura needs to come from within.
Lefou
Lefou is Gaston’s trusty but dim-witted sidekick and lackey. This role is for a good singer, but
more importantly your very best comedian, who isn't afraid of making bold choices or looking
silly. Be sure to choose a performer who complements Gaston well as his loyal and
ever-faithful sidekick.
Silly Girls
The Silly Girls are in love with Gaston and will do almost anything just to be near him. Look for
three girls who can portray the comic nature of these roles and enjoy playing off each other.
The Silly Girls sing together in three numbers and their sound should mix well.
Lumiere
Lumiere is a confident, charming French mâitre d who has become a candelabra. He has an
incessant bickering and give and take rapport with Cogsworth. Lumiere should be a strong
singer who can light up the stage in Be Our Guest and who can handle the French accent. This
role covers a range of emotions (from charming entertainer to brave soldier) and requires
prominent song and dance, so try to cast a strong, versatile performer.
Cogsworth
Cogsworth is the nervous British butler of the castle who has become a clock. Like all of the
castle’s Servants, he shows a fatherly compassion for Belle yet is perfectly submissive to the
master, the Beast. Cogsworth enjoys feeling like the boss and has no problem getting into it
with Lumiere. Cast a strong actor and singer who can act in charge.
Mrs. Potts
Mrs. Potts is the castle’s endearing cook who has become a teapot. The actor you cast needs a
strong, sweet voice and should be able to convey comforting, maternal qualities amidst the
chaos that is breaking out in the castle. Look for a student who can play a loving mother figure
to all the characters.
Babette
Babette is a flirtatious maid who has become a feather duster. She misses the finer things in
life. Babette is happy to be at Belle’s service at a moment’s notice, but her true heart comes
through in Human Again. Look for a good actor with solid vocal skills to handle Babette s
harmonies.
Madame de la Grande Bouche
Madame De La Grande Bouche is an opera singer who has become a wardrobe. Madame is
larger-than-life in everything she does, including her singing and dancing. Look for that student
who can portray the ultimate diva with a heart with an outsized personality and voice.
Madame has some harmony lines with Mrs. Potts and Babette, so cast a singer who can hold
her own but knows when to pull back in order to sound good with the others.
Chip
Chip is Mrs. Potts’s son who has become a teacup. You may cast a younger student for this role,
but it is not imperative. Chip has a wonderful naïveté that endears him to all of the Servants.
Cast an actor who can portray the honesty and spirit of a child and is comfortable trying to sing
Chip’s few solo lines.
Old Beggar Woman/Enchantress
The Old Beggar Woman/Enchantress should be portrayed by an actor with a flair for the visually
dramatic as this is a non-speaking role. Her transformation in the Prologue needs to entice the
audience into the story.
Monsieur D’Arque
Monsieur D'Arque is the sinister, creepy proprietor of the lunatic asylum. Cast an actor who can
believably exude his sinister personality. Although Monsieur D Arque has a few lines of solo
singing in The Mob Song, this is primarily a non-singing role, so look for a solid actor first.
Servants
The Servants of the castle can include Statues, a Dust Pan, Flatware, Plates, an Egg Timer,
Napkins, a Carpet, Salt & Pepper Shakers and any other household (or castle hold items) you
and your cast can imagine. These enchanted characters are the Rockettes of the castle. They
should be able to handle a potentially awkward costume while singing and dancing in two big
production numbers. Gender: Any
Villagers
The Villagers are the inhabitants of Belle’s town. There are some featured solos and lines that
will come from this ensemble (Bookseller, Baker, etc.). The group must provide vocal power
throughout the show and dance in the production numbers, so be sure to cast performers with
a wide base of ability. Gender: Any
